Part 2: Lisbon

Part 2: Lisbon

Saturday night, I took a night bus from Madrid to Lisbon with my travel team of Grace, Emily, and Talia. We departed at 10:45pm and arrived in Lisbon at 5:45am on Sunday morning. Portugal is one hour ahead of Spain, so the bus ride was really 8 hours. We decided the night bus would be better than one during the day because we would have a whole extra day to explore Lisbon. It was not ideal, but we made it.

We spent Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday in Lisbon. Here are some of the highlights:

Riding the famous trolley line #28 around the city

Going to the top of the Christ monument across the river from Lisbon. The structure is 243 meters high!
The view from the ground:

And the view from the top:

Spending a day in the river village of Belem, about 20 minutes east of Lisbon. We went to a modern art museum, saw a beautiful old monastery, the explorers monument and the tower of Belem (shown here).

We had lunch in the village and after, we had the famous pastries in this shop. We heard some people at the hotel talking about them, so we figured we had to try. As it turns out, this place is really famous and there were about 300 tables inside! And we still had to wait in line!

It tasted a little bit like fried dough with a crispy crust, and you could sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top. Yummmm :)

Exploring this old castle perched on top of the hill in Lisbon.

Here's a view of the castle from the main square in Lisbon.

From the castle, we could see over the entire city and across the river. Here's a photo of my partners in crime over the past week.
We rented "GoCars" for an afternoon. The little cars have a built in GPS that tells you where to turn and talks to you about the history of some buildings and sites. It was a very cool way to see the city. Plus these little cars could go on some roads that were too narrow for real cars.

It was all fun and games until Grace and Emily's car couldn't make it up a hill. Luckily there were some onlookers who sprung into action and pushed their car to the top. Eventually, their engine died completely, and the GoCar people had to switch their car haha. Oh well, it's all part of the experience. We still had a great time!

Check back tomorrow for photos from Sevilla and Granada!

  1. Fabulous photos. Sounds like an amazing trip! I blew up the photos and noted two things that I found interesting - the foundation of the bridge has dolphins painted on it and the GoCar looks like it has stitches in it's back end ;-)

I can't wait for the second installment.
    Love,
    Mom
